Five tips choosing real estate palm springs

If Palm Springs real estate is on your wish list, you may be wondering where to begin. We talk with buyers every day and here are a few considerations that have proved helpful.

What’s on your must-have list? There are a lot of reasons people want to live in Palm Springs. One of them is golf. Another is a thriving community of like-minded friends. What are your priorities for living here? Want to be able to smell the fairway from your patio? Want to step off your back deck onto a hiking or horse trail? Want to live near friends? Make a list of your most important reasons for being here. They should be uppermost in your mind as you look at homes for sale in Palm Springs.

Neighborhood or community? Palm Springs real estate can be generally divided into two categories: residential communities and neighborhoods. The former includes country clubs, golf and tennis developments and communities of estate properties, homes or townhomes that may be gated or not, but usually have consistent architectural and landscaping standards. The latter, “neighborhoods,” includes areas with lots of variety in styles, including many of the older sections of Palm Springs. This may be an aesthetic or emotional choice. What do you want to see when you walk out your front door and down your street?

New or old? Do you want a house that comes with a warranty or are you willing to put up with the fixes that a 50- or 60-year-old house might require?

Who does the work? Community associations, such as those in golf course developments, collect fees that cover the cost and management of landscape, road and pool maintenance. For some owners, that’s a huge benefit; others would rather do it themselves or make their own decisions about how maintenance will be managed. Where do you fit?

Close-in or far out? Do you want to be able to stroll or bike to your favorite coffee shop in the morning or pick up a few things at the store without getting in your car? Or do you relish end-of-the-road privacy? Palm Springs real estate offers plenty of both, so again, it’s a matter of deciding what’s most important to you.

Of course there are many other considerations when you’re choosing real estate in Palm Springs or any community. But these five get beyond the obvious (size, price, bedrooms/baths) into features that really affect quality of life and happiness in your new home.
